AV Narayanan, an editor-cum-filmmaker, has created a unique space of his own as a visual editor in the film industry by associating with the editing jobs of a range of award-winning works. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Filmmaking with specialization in Film & Video Editing from FTII, Pune.
Since 1999, he has been working as an editor in both feature films and documentaries. He has also done Television Writing & Direction, Program Management, Liaison & Coordination, Production Management, Teaching, Student Management and Team Building & Leadership.
As a teacher, he worked as Associate Professor & Head of Department, Editing at K R Narayanan National Institute for Visual Science & Arts, Thekkumthala, Kottayam where he designed the syllabus and technical aesthetic inputs have been given in Editing on 3 software’s Avid Media Composer, Final Cut ProX.3 & Adobe Première. He also worked as Consultant Faculty Head for SIMS Calicut.
He was also the Chief Consultant to Film Production & Distribution firm in Kochi and also worked as Selection committee member of Long Documentary films International Documentary Film Festival, Thiruvananthapuram. He worked as an Independent Editor & Assistant Director in a number of International film projects such as Akhnoor (2006), The Last Monk (2005), Journeys (2004), Bollywood Rebound (2002). He also worked in a string of Documentaries and Fillers for Zee Television Network(2001-2) and quite a number of short fiction films and documentaries that participated and won National as well as International recognition. He worked as editor cum associate director in documentaries such as Pakarnattam (1995) that won a State award for best documentary, Nottam (1999), and Minukku (2006).
He also worked as Assistant Editor in the following mainstream Hindi films- Train to Pakistan, Private Detective, Josh, Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Khoobsurat. He also wrote and directed a Malayalam feature film, Anthiponvettom that features all the prominent artists of Malayalam. Other highlights of his career was his role as a director in a number of projects viz. Court Of Women at Indonesia, Bali, (UNDP Regional Centre Colombo, 2009), the WE film for UNDP Colombo featuring PLWHA ‘s from Cambodia and India in association with PDA (Thailand) (2008). (Arts & Media workshop Goa, 2003), Arts Camp of renowned painters against Aids in Amby Valley, Pune (2003), UNDP 2003 (New Delhi), Asia Centre (Bangkok)2004— now has come out as Celebration of Life (CD/DVD ROM , Music by Peter Gabriel).
A short film, The Touch, in Hindi made by him successfully received a cultural fellowship (2001) from Majlis (a women’s organization in Mumbai) for reviving a age old Sanskrit play in Koodiyattam style. He worked as an Assistant Director of an active member of the art community that practices Sanskrit theatre brought him close to a good number of film makers such as Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Kumar Shahani, Ketan Mehta, Mani Kaul etc.
