77 th Venice Film Festival: Eight women selected for competition section

The line-up of the films participate in the competition section of the 77th Venice Film Festival (September 2-12) for Golden Lion has been announced. Venice will be one of the first major film festivals to take place as a physical event following the Covid-19 outbreak.

The major highlight of this year’s selection is the presence of eight women in the competition section (compared to two last year). Among the big-name directors selected are Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Michel Franco (Nuevo Orden), Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Wife Of A Spy), Andrei Konchalovsky (Dear Comrades), Gianfranco Rosi (Notturno) and Malgorzata Szumowska (Never Gonna Snow Again, co-dircted by Michal Englert).

Announcing the 2020 line up Tuesday, Venice festival director Alberto Barbera was keen to point out that this year’s event will feature films from around the world, ensuring that Venice will continue to be “a shop window for the best cinema production in the world.”.

As previously announced, Daniele Luchetti’s Lacci will open the festival out of competition. Cate Blanchett will preside over the Competition jury that also includes Joanna Hogg and Christian Petzold. At the press conference, festival director Alberto Barbera said more titles may be added closer to the festival.
